The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia will take part in National Night Out events on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. The office will join law enforcement partners and community members in nearly a dozen locations across the district.
United States Attorney C. Todd Gilbert said, “The Western District of Virginia is one of the most geographically diverse districts in the country, spanning from the Northern Shenandoah Valley all the way down to the North Carolina border and we will have AUSAs and staff at events throughout the entire region. National Night Out is an opportunity for folks in our community who might not know what the U.S. Attorney’s Office is, what we do, or the services we provide to meet us one-on-one. It’s a wonderful night where communities come together and reminds us, we have much more in common than we think.”
Assistant United States Attorneys and professional staff are scheduled to attend events in Abingdon, Bristol, Chilhowie, Albemarle County, Louisa, Pulaski, Woodstock, Vinton, Roanoke and other communities.
U.S. Attorney Gilbert added, “Local law enforcement plays a crucial role in Department of Justice priorities, like Operation Take Back America, and we are proud to meet our partners in their communities to increase partnerships and trust during National Night Out. These bonds strengthen relationships which makes our entire district safer.”
National Night Out is an annual event held on the first Tuesday of August that encourages cooperation between law enforcement and residents to help make neighborhoods safer. Millions participate nationwide each year.
Started in 1984 with support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance at the U.S. Department of Justice and administered by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), National Night Out aims to build positive relationships between police officers and neighbors through activities such as block parties, cookouts and safety demonstrations. More information about this program can be found at https://natw.org/.
Neighborhoods participating in National Night Out host a variety of gatherings designed to bring together local police officers with community members under positive circumstances.
