A Richmond man has been sentenced to 10 years and 10 months in prison for his role in an armed robbery at a Dollar General store, as well as for using a firearm during the crime. According to court documents, Jarviontae Tykee McLaurine, 26, along with two accomplices, entered the store on October 13, 2022. All three were armed and wore masks.

During the incident, one of the robbers ordered a clerk to open the cash register and get on the floor. Another robber told a customer to lie down while a third directed another customer to the front of the store at gunpoint. The group then held the store manager at gunpoint and forced them to open another register. Two robbers took both the manager and clerk into a back office in an attempt to access more money before fleeing.

McLaurine was previously convicted of possession of a firearm by a felon in June 2023 in Richmond Circuit Court. In August that year, he was convicted in Hanover Circuit Court for making a false statement on a criminal history consent form and attempting to possess a firearm as a convicted felon. He was arrested again two months later and convicted in February 2024 in federal court for possession of a firearm by a felon. At the time of the Dollar General robbery, McLaurine was under supervised probation for two previous convictions.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Washington Field Division together with the Richmond Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephen E. Anthony and Janet Jin Ah Lee prosecuted.

“This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime,” according to officials. “Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).”
