A Norfolk man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for drug trafficking and firearm offenses. According to court documents, Johnathan David Bell, 36, was involved in distributing methamphetamine and a heroin/fentanyl mixture.
On August 7, 2024, law enforcement carried out a controlled purchase from Bell. During this operation, Bell distributed over 111 grams of methamphetamine and more than one gram of a heroin/fentanyl mix.
Later that month on August 16, detectives observed Bell at a hotel parking lot in Norfolk carrying two backpacks. He placed one backpack in a vehicle and left with the other before returning to the car. Detectives detained Bell at the scene. After a narcotics dog detected drugs inside the vehicle, police searched it and found the black backpack containing nearly 387 grams of methamphetamine, more than one gram of a heroin/fentanyl mixture, drug paraphernalia, a digital scale, and a loaded handgun.
The sentencing was announced by Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Christopher Heck, Special Agent in Charge of ICE Homeland Security Investigations Washington D.C.; Mark Talbot, Chief of Norfolk Police; and Paul Neudigate, Chief of Virginia Beach Police. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Darryl J. Mitchell.
