A university professor alleges that persistent false accusations and harassment from a former colleague have led to significant harm to his professional reputation and career prospects. The complaint was filed by Dr. Michael Halassa, M.D., Ph.D., on March 6, 2026, in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia against Stefan Oline, a former member of Dr. Halassa’s laboratory.

According to the filing, Dr. Halassa is seeking compensatory and punitive damages for what he describes as an ongoing campaign by Mr. Oline to damage his standing within the academic community. The complaint outlines a series of actions allegedly taken by Mr. Oline over several years, including submitting complaints to human resources departments at multiple institutions where Dr. Halassa worked or was being considered for employment.

The document states that Mr. Oline’s efforts included social media campaigns, creation of defamatory websites containing personal information such as banking details and home address, and physical disruption of academic events. One incident cited occurred on February 20, 2026, when Mr. Oline reportedly sent an unsolicited email containing “knowingly false claims” to students and faculty at Virginia Tech. The email also referenced plans to disrupt proceedings at an upcoming scientific meeting in Washington, D.C., which allegedly caused concern among students and researchers.

Dr. Halassa asserts that these actions were designed to interfere with his new employment relationship at Virginia Tech’s Fralin Biomedical Research Institute where he is set to begin as faculty leader in April 2026. He further claims that every substantive allegation made by Mr. Oline has been investigated by independent fact-finders at various institutions—including New York University (NYU), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Tufts University, and the University of Helsinki—and found unsupported by evidence.

The complaint provides detailed background on Dr. Halassa’s academic credentials and career trajectory, noting his research contributions in neuroscience and psychiatry as well as awards received throughout his career. It also recounts how Mr. Oline joined Dr. Halassa’s lab at NYU in 2015 as a postdoctoral fellow before transitioning to a lab manager role due to performance issues.

After leaving Dr. Halassa’s lab for a position at Princeton University—an opportunity arranged by Dr. Halassa—the relationship reportedly soured for reasons described as unclear in the filing. From that point forward, Dr. Halassa alleges that Mr. Oline began organizing complaints through private messaging channels such as WhatsApp and contacting journalists with allegations against him.

Among the specific claims made by Mr. Oline were accusations of embezzlement, research fraud, animal cruelty, mistreatment of lab members, wage theft, data fabrication, and general workplace harassment—all denied by Dr. Halassa in the filing as “false” or “fabricated.” The document includes quotations from communications attributed to Mr. Oline such as: “We (other former postdocs… ) have gone to HR at NYU Langone and MIT,” “My goal is to distribute this information as widely as possible,” and “I am determined to do what is within my power to prevent him from taking advantage of a single additional trainee if I can help it.”

The complaint describes multiple investigations conducted by universities following these allegations; each investigation reportedly resulted in findings exonerating Dr. Halassa from any wrongdoing or misconduct alleged by Mr. Oline.

In addition to institutional complaints and social media activity—including tweets during Dr. Halassa’s appointment process at the University of Helsinki—the filing describes incidents where Mr. Oline appeared unannounced at academic conferences distributing flyers linking attendees via QR code to websites containing defamatory statements about Dr. Halassa.

Dr. Halassa claims these actions not only harmed his reputation but also interfered with recruitment efforts for new positions; he cites instances where initial enthusiasm from prospective employers turned into abrupt terminations after concerns surfaced echoing those raised by Mr.Oline.

Legal arguments presented include counts for defamation (including defamation per se), tortious interference with contract and business expectancy relationships within academia, and intentional infliction of emotional distress due to alleged extreme conduct intended to cause harm.

As relief from the court, Dr.Halassa requests judgment on all counts after trial—including compensatory damages assessed by jury verdict—as well as punitive damages for willful or malicious conduct attributed to Mr.Oline.He also seeks attorneys’ fees, costs, and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court. The case number is 7:26cv00200.The attorneys representing Dr.Halassa are J.Benjamin Rottenborn (Woods Rogers Vandeventer Black PLC)and David H.Rich(Todd & Weld LLP).
