Attorney General Jay Jones warned on April 17 that Virginians should be cautious of predatory tactics used by tax debt settlement companies as the tax season concludes.
The warning comes as many residents finalize their tax documents and payments, a time when financially vulnerable individuals may be targeted. “Tax debt settlement companies often exploit vulnerable people’s desperation and fear of the IRS while offering reassurances they are in no position to make,” said Attorney General Jay Jones. “These practices are predatory and dangerous. If you or a loved one experience this type of company, I urge you to reach out to my office and we will work tirelessly to hold them accountable.”
Jones’ office advised taxpayers who owe money on federal income taxes that there are legitimate resources available, including assistance from the Internal Revenue Service and the Taxpayer Advocate Service, which operates independently within the IRS. For those seeking professional help outside these agencies, it is recommended to choose a certified public accountant or an attorney who is an active member of the Virginia State Bar.
The Office of the Attorney General has previously taken action against misleading business practices in this area. During a prior administration, Wall & Associates, Inc., a Virginia-based company, was found by Fauquier County Circuit Court to have violated consumer protection laws by deceiving consumers about results and eligibility for relief. The court ordered restitution for qualified consumers nationwide along with civil penalties exceeding $1 million.
The Attorney General’s office provides various services such as consumer protection resources for identity theft and fraud reporting as noted on its official website. It also addresses issues like human trafficking and domestic violence through legal advocacy according to its official website. The office supports civil rights enforcement programs according to its official website and serves all residents across Virginia according to its official website. In addition, it provides legal counsel for state agencies while promoting public safety as detailed on its official site.
Virginians with concerns about tax debt settlement companies are encouraged to contact Attorney General Jones’ Consumer Protection Section via phone or online complaint form.
